The Tampa Bay Pride Band and Symphonic Winds seeks a full-time Associate Director of Bands to start in the fall of 2025. The successful candidate will provide vision and leadership for all aspects of the band program. Director responsibilities will include conducting the Tampa Bay Symphonic Winds, the Tampa Bay Pride Marching Band, and/or Jazz Band. Other associate duties that match the candidate’s qualifications, background, and interests as well as the needs of the Tampa Bay Pride Band and Symphonic Winds may be assigned. The Director of Bands is expected to provide leadership in recruiting outstanding members to the band and to maintain active and collaborative relationships with public school and community band programs throughout the state of Florida and affiliate bands of the Pride Band Alliance. The Director of Bands will promote collaborative relationships among the brass, woodwind, and percussion leadership. Sustained involvement in professional growth beyond the band is expected, as is participation on the board and its committees. The Associate Director is not currently a paid position.
Our band functions with a fully active board of 5 voting members, 9 section leaders, 4 committees, serves approximately 70 concert band musicians as well as 70 marching band members of all levels of musicianship, musical background and experience.
The Tampa Bay Pride Band and Symphonic Winds is a part of the arts and cultural heart of Tampa. Our band is a member of the Pride Band Alliance, formally known as Lesbian and Gay Band Association,and has received multiple local grants and community honors.
Degrees and experience in wind band conducting, music education, or performance, by time of appointment. Applicants who have made significant progress toward a terminal degree in music will also be considered. Degree completion by June 1, 2026, is required.
The successful candidate will possess conducting abilities of the highest artistic standard; a comprehensive knowledge of wind band repertoire; effective and productive rehearsal techniques and excellent pedagogical skills. Preference will be given to candidates who have one or more additional areas of expertise in college-level music instruction; particular preference will be given to candidates whose areas of expertise include music education and/or conducting. The successful candidate will have experience directing a band in a K-12 setting. The successful candidate should have demonstrated abilities in recruiting and retaining members and possess superior administrative skills. An established record of commitment to the band, public school, and community collaborations is desired.
