Seeking New Assistant Artistic Director

The Tampa Bay Pride Band and Tampa Bay Symphonic Winds seeks an Assistant Artistic Director to begin summer 2022. The Tampa Bay Pride Band (TBPB) is a 501c3 non-profit community band, and Assistant Artistic Director is a volunteer position. The successful candidate will provide vision and leadership for all aspects of the band program. Responsibilities will include directing TBPB’s marching band, and its concert band, the Tampa Bay Symphonic Winds (TBSW). Other associate duties that match the candidate’s qualifications, background, and interests as well as the needs of the TBPB may be assigned.

The Assistant Artistic Director is expected to provide leadership in recruiting outstanding members to the band and to maintain active and collaborative relationships with public school and community band programs throughout the state of Florida and affiliate bands of the Pride Bands Alliance (fka LGBA). The Assistant Artistic Director will promote collaborative relationships among the brass, woodwind and percussion leadership. Sustained involvement in professional growth beyond the band is expected, as is non-voting participation on the board and its committees. The band functions with a fully active board of 5 voting members, 9 section leaders, 4 committees, and serves approximately 70 concert band musicians as well as 70 marching band members of all levels of musicianship, musical background, and experiences.

Required Qualifications:

Degrees and experience in wind band conducting, music education, or performance, by time of appointment.  Applicants who have made significant progress toward a terminal degree in music will also be considered. Degree completion by June 2022 is required.

The successful candidate will possess conducting abilities of the highest artistic standard; a comprehensive knowledge of wind band repertoire; effective and productive rehearsal techniques; and excellent pedagogical skills. Preference will be given to candidates who have one or more additional areas of expertise in college-level music instruction; particular preference will be given to candidates whose experience include music education and/or conducting. The successful candidate will have experience directing a band in a K-12 setting. The successful candidate should have demonstrated abilities in recruiting and retaining members and possess superior administrative skills. An established record of commitment to the band, public school, or community collaborations is desired.

Artistic Goals and Concert Programming

  1. What kind of artistic goals would you imagine for the Tampa Bay Pride Band?
  2. Please provide a program for concert band you have created in the past or would like to perform. Describe the criteria and ideas that led you to create the program in the way you did.
  3. In general, how do you feel about being a visible spokesperson for the band and the larger LGBTQ+ community? Describe any experience you have speaking in public and specifically about LGBTQ+ community concerns.
  4. Describe some ideas for reaching out to the community and furthering the mission of the band.

All required materials must be submitted by March 14th, 2022.  Appropriate background screening will be conducted for the successful candidate. Selected finalists will participate in an interview and be asked to lead rehearsals on a piece or pieces selected by the Artistic Director in April 2022. The number of rehearsal hours will be determined based on the number of finalists, but the goal is to provide all finalists ample time to work with the band.
